Innovative conference explores effective strategies to increase productivity of farms in Senegal

MINNEAPOLIS (June 1, 2018) – MATTER, a Minnesota-based global health nonprofit on a mission to move people forward by eliminating barriers to a healthier life, and the Gorgui Dieng Foundation, established by NBA player Gorgui Dieng of the Minnesota Timberwolves, today announced the Regenerate Senegal Conference. This innovative and interactive event is scheduled for August 10-15, 2018, at the Gorgui Dieng Center for Agricultural Excellence in Kebemer, Senegal.

Farming in Senegal presents numerous challenges, including poor soil quality and irregular rainfall, that limits crop selection and produces inconsistent yields. Because of harsh conditions, the majority of farmers are unable to do more than subsistence farming, leaving Senegal largely dependent on importing its food to meet its people’s needs.

Quenton Marty, President of MATTER, commented, “MATTER and the Gorgui Dieng Foundation have teamed up for this exciting conference. Through workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions, local farmers and international participants will discover innovative solutions and learn bold new practices. This will ensure lasting harvests and the ability to cope with weather extremes, resulting in fields that will sustain the farm and community for generations to come.”

During the conference, a diverse group of experts from around the world will present fresh ideas and lead solution-driven discussions around a variety of topics, including farming in extreme climates, soil as a continuous resource, farm cooperative models, biodiversity strategies, intercropping & cover crops, and water conservation techniques. Participants will have the unique opportunity to see these innovative farming practices being put to use at the Gorgui Dieng Center for Agricultural Excellence, a working agricultural laboratory designed by MATTER in rural Kebemer.

In addition to the Gorgui Dieng Foundation, MATTER partnered with Terra Ingredients and Southwoods Ecosystems to launch this exciting initiative.

Farmers, growers, organizations and individuals interested in connecting with others around innovative practices are encouraged to attend. For more information, please visit the registration page at There are a limited number of spots available for this unique conference.
